What Is CBD For Dogs and Its Benefits

Using CBD for dogs is one of the best remedies to treat a dog who has health complications. You might have also used cannabis oil and found it completely safe to use - but can the same be said for dogs using it too?

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in Cannabis sativa, the Latin name for cannabis or hemp.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most prevalent cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It’s history in medicine dates back to prehistory. It has long been pushed aside while scientists and users focused on the mind-altering component, THC. (---> to read more about 'what is CBD?' - click here!)

CBD is commonly used for dogs these days; primarily because of the many healthy benefits that it brings for your dog and it is readily available in the markets as well.

How is CBD for dogs used?

It is often wondered how CBD is consumed by the dogs. It comes in either treats, liquid oil form, or capsule pills. In most cases, it is given to the dog orally in liquid form. The best idea is to introduce only a few drops of oil to the dog at a time. It is known to work fastest and have maximum efficiency when it is used in its liquid form. If you were to use the pills, you would have to dissolve it in the dog’s food or use a pill popper if you're dog is more used to being given pills.

Benefits of CBD for dogs

The one thing that is surely of major interest for people these days is to study about the many benefits CBD oil has for pet dogs. There is no doubt in the fact that CBD oil for dogs offers some wonderful health benefits. It also serves as a potentially ‘safe’ treatment for many health concerns of the dog. In many cases, Cannabis oil will work as a safe natural remedy for your dog to treat not one but several health conditions. This diversity of dealing with different kinds of health complications make it a great remedy. And yes, we always say that CBD oil for dogs is a remedy and is perfect for maintaining the health of your dog.

Promotes Cardiovascular Health

CBD has been linked to heart health. It can reduce the damage from damaged blood vessels and irregular heart rates, protect blood vessels from damage and dilate the arteries, and reduce heart rate and blood pressure associated with stress and anxiety.

Loss of appetite

The most common health concern for dogs is when they lose their appetite. They don’t eat, refuse to open their mouth and it can easily stress you out. Of course, this would directly have an adverse impact on the dog’s well being; both physical and mental. CBD for dogs helps to boost the appetite of dogs when given to them in small amounts repeatedly. In most cases, the dog refuses to eat because he is dealing with some sort of nausea. The oil helps to soothe down the nausea. And make the dog feel less sick so that he can enjoy his meal. The trick however, is to make sure to introduce the oil to the dogs in very little doses rather than giving it all of it at once on daily basis.

Chronic bone pain, arthritis or inflammation

Every living being on this earth has been created with a combination of bones and muscles. Dogs are no different. They have bones and therefore, all problems that the bones can bring such as ‘arthritis’ or chronic pain in the bones. This can be a little surprising for some people who actually think bone problems are only valid for human beings and no other living thing. This is a myth and not true.

Dogs have bones and hence, can suffer through all normal bone problems as well like calcium and vitamin D deficiency and osteoporosis. It works not only to improve the bone strength in the long run but also acts as an instant pain killer to relieve sore pain from joints.

Relieving pain and inflammation is the most popular benefit of CBD for dogs. Pain can be a symptom of many types of health conditions. While inflammation is part of the healing process, it can increase pain or discomfort.

Luckily, CBD can suppress and even interrupt the pain signals in your dog’s brain. This can help alleviate both acute and chronic pain. It not only interrupts those pain signals, it can also reduce the inflammation that causes the pain in the first place.

Here are just some of the common health problems that cause pain that CBD oil can help with:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Cancer
  • Sprains and strains
  • Torn ligaments
  • Recovery from surgery

Most conventional veterinarians will recommend drugs like NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) for these conditions. These conventional drugs can have adverse effects. Instead, studies show that replacing those conventional meds with CBD oil is much safer for your dog.

Reduces Autoimmune Disease

CBD has been shown to decrease the production and release of inflammatory cytokines that can cause allergies, hypersensitivities and autoimmunity. It can also suppress something called Th17 dominance, which is a major cause of autoimmune diseases. CBD is also a powerful antioxidant that’s shown to be more powerful than vitamins C and E.

Anxiety and distress

When you see your dog lazing around in the corner with a dropped face and fail to understand what is wrong with him – see it this way. He is stressed and has anxiety and is behaving just as you would do under the same situation. Animals can have stress too and it is best to get them the help they need to deal with it rather than refusing to empathize. One of the many known benefits of CBD oil for dogs is that it helps to ease out the mind of dogs. CBD oil has proven to be a brilliant natural remedy for anxiety and distress in dogs. It can make the dog instantly feel relaxed.

Epilepsy

Nobody ever said that epilepsy is only a psychological problem for humans and animals cannot have it. Your pet dog can suffer from epilepsy and seizures just as any human does. CBD oil for dog seizures works magnificently for the dog. If your dog has epilepsy and is having a seizure – it is best to introduce very high amounts of the oil to it because the affects will be immediate this way. High amounts of oil will help to control the seizure’s intensity and bring immediate relief for the dog.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Animal studies show that CBD can prevent colitis (IBD) and restore normal gut motility in inflammatory bowel disease.

CBD Is Not Psychoactive

CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) can also be found in cannabis and it’s this compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties. Most CBD oils are just that, the beneficial CBD without the THC. They typically come from hemp, not marijuana. In short, your dog won’t get “high” from CBD oil … he’ll get the relaxation without the intoxication!

Risks involved with CBD oil for dogs

Remember that it is important to make CBD oil out of natural herbs. As it provides a natural remedy as it is non-toxic in composition. The composition of CBD oil makes it trustworthy and something that can be highly beneficial for your dog. As its composition is natural the oil is completely harmless for your dog in any way. Doesn’t matter how much quantity you put in. The benefits are pretty great. But like they say, excess of anything can be damaging. The same applies to overdosing on CBD oil.

The oil can interfere with the healthy digestive cycle of the dogs – causing diarrhea and fluid-like poop. This is common and if it happens, it is likely to resolve on its own in a few days.

If the dog is sensitive to the herb or allergic, he might get a skin reaction that can cause patches over the skin, itchiness, and rashes and can also affect the tongue and throat causing inflammation.

Deciding healthy dose of CBD oil for the dog

The very first thing that you will need to do when setting a healthy dose of CBD oil for your dog is the intensity of the oil. You should be able to get it from the ingredient chart that comes with the oil. Use details from this chart to determine the oil intensity and then consequently determine dose for your dog.
